All great deeds start
from a simple thing. One fine day Vam was watching a
Portuguese TV interview with the Chinese billionaire Mr. Stanley Ho
when he first focused on Macau. The man was telling his own true story,
which was as thrilling as a Mario Puzo novel, but what interested Vam mostly was not the
adventure story and the fancy car Mr. Ho was interviewed in, but rather
the fabulous Land he was talking about - Macau.
After doing some
data mining Vam quickly came to understanding that Macau played a key
role as a marketing tool of trade between mainland China and the rest
of the world. Like neighboring Hong Kong it was a free economic zone,
and an offshore heaven, but in the context of the sophisticated
oriental political game was in some way an even better option for new
Business Development projects in the region. So, before too long Vam
realized that there was an enormous business development potential that
had been overlooked in Russia and the pioneering mood was back in his
head...
Using his vast
connections in influential Portuguese business circles, Vam got
together with local experts to win their support. And he did it right,
the idea of forging business links between Macau and the Soviet Union
was met with rousing welcome and the strategic alliance shaped up.
It was very opportune
for a high ranking Macau Economic Services Department official Dr. Antonio Leca
to be in Portugal at that time and going once into their first meeting
they came out as old friends and partners. The consensus was reached:
Antonio went back to promote the Initiative with the Macau business
community while Vam returned to Moscow to do the follow up with the
Russian business authorities.
In those turbulent
days Soviet high-ranking bureaucrats had something more to worry about
than concentrating on tiny Macau and Vam was breaking his neck making
them pay attention to the subject. The most common reaction was: all
right it sounds good but where the hell is your M-a-c-a-u on the map!?
So it took quite some effort to do the groundwork before things started
to happen. But once it happened the Macau Business Project was a sure
thing.
A representative
delegation of top business leaders, headed by Macau Economics Minister Galhardo Simoes, came to Moscow and Vam personally arranged the
program and took the delegates to all leading Soviet ministries and
Foreign Trade Organizations. The reciprocal visit to Macau of a Soviet
high level delegation, lead by the USSR CCI President Malkevich,
quickly followed. Right after that a group of Russian exporters and
importers rushed to establish their presence in Macau. The project
culminated with formation of a specialized Trading House uniting top business leaders
of Macau in a company specially set up for trade with the Soviet
Union and other East European countries. And so Vam had done it again...
